Surgical Weight Loss

Christ Hospital's Doctors On Video - Surgical Weight Loss

Surgical Weight Loss
Being significantly overweight puts your health at risk while limiting your quality of life. Weight loss surgery is a proven way to help.

In addition to weight loss, patients benefit from:

  • improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride and blood sugar levels
  • a decrease in sleep apnea
  • reduced back and leg pain
  • less dependency on medication
  • and an overall improvement to quality of life.

As a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, The Christ Hospital has talented, experienced surgeons, strong outcomes, and a variety of surgical weight loss options. Here, we offer laparoscopic gastric bypass as well as Lap Band®. We also have extensive experience with high-risk patients and complicated procedures.

Surgery Descriptions

  • Gastric bypass. The gold standard of weight loss procedures:  During this procedure, the surgeon uses a stapling device to create a small gastric pouch, allowing part of the stomach and small bowel to be bypassed. This operation causes dramatic, permanent weight loss.
  • Lap Band®:  During this laparoscopic procedure, the surgeon places an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a smaller pouch and narrowed outlet. This, in turn, reduces the stomach’s capacity, increases the feeling of fullness and creates long-term weight loss. The Lap Band® is the least invasive of the surgical options, which means less pain, hospitalization and recovery time.

A team approach
The Christ Hospital offers a team approach to bariatric surgery, which includes a dedicated surgical team, bariatric floor nurses, dieticians, psychiatrists and exercise physiologists.

After surgery, our patients learn about nutrition and exercise, receive follow up care from the physician and can participate in support groups.
